  1. I do have a sexual response to it- it lasts a long time too- like I can be turned on all day lol And no, it’s not just about the closeness of the subject. Who the hell knows why, but the tapping, scratching, etc turns me on. I have never experienced anything like this and am not into any fetishes.. I’m a married, straight woman and started watching out of curiosity!

  2. Personally, no asmr isn’t sexual. It’s the same way that if you go to a massage parlour to get a massage it isn’t sexual, but there are some massage parlours that offer sexual favours as well. That’s how I imagine it gets likened to it. I think it has been made out to be perverse and it disgusts me. Sloppy kissing sounds and shots of breasts or anything of the sort make me very uncomfortable and I find them cringe worthy and done for views. It’s a shame that before the world could hear about the benefits of ASMR, that people swooped in and cashed in on making it sexual.

  3. For me it is. ASMR usually feels the same as a sexual response for me. I get warm sensations in my pelvis and back. It’s not that different from a sexual response. When people speak softly or speak with saliva in their mouths I get the sensations. Some noises, like a razor blade buzzing, can do it. I stopped getting haircuts at salons because they usually shaved my neck after. The razor going down my neck would make strong tingles shoot down my spine. It was the noise and sensation. I’d get similar sensations in my lower back and abdomen. It was difficult to sit still and the sensation of the razor would make me shiver. I started cutting my hair at home because I wanted to avoid that situation, even though I somewhat enjoyed the sensation. It was part enjoyable and part annoying, but not something I wanted to experience in public. It was good in the end because haircuts are too expensive.

  4. If a sedative is sexual for a person it could be. Honestly, I think it is a ridiculous question.

There is a deep experience when people are young and fall in love, not requiring sex, and it a different thing. That woozy feeling is fairly common but is also different than ASMR.

There are two things that are missing in the research on ASMR.

    1. Confusion about universality of ASMR. ASMR does not simply equal relaxation. It is like a drug more than simply having a relaxing day at the park or beach. I suspect many of those claiming to experience it when watching a video said to induce ASMR are not talking about the same thing. Remember that no one would discuss this for thousands of years before the Internet made it into a thing. TV didn’t allow it to be known. Free speech didn’t allow it to be known. The 60’s didn’t allow it to be known. If you survey people on the street about the “symptoms” of ASMR without first saying anything about watching video, you will understand it is rarely known.

    2. Confusion about nomenclature, connected to #1 above. What is tingling? If it isn’t universal then it is like a normal vision and color blind person looking at a box of crayons and experiencing something different that seems to be referencing the same. Are people saying they experience “tingling” because there is no word to match the actual experience? You need to be careful because people will often follow suggestions rather than carefully report the details (i.e. multiple eye witness reports that are demonstratively wrong, conformance experiments). I have always called it “the hum” – it has no sound but is like a single tone is taking over the body and mind.
