Note about the poll above when viewing results: because it is “Select All That Apply” the total votes does not equal the total voters because each voter could vote more than once.  To get an estimate of the number of voters, look at the total votes on other polls which were not “Select All That Apply.” because those total votes = total voters.

  1. I first started experiencing ASMR when I was six, after participating in a group meditation at my after school program. I’ve always been the analytical type and what ever I consider truth must correspond to my spiritual beliefs. I do not and never have been able to comprehend why we separate the all from the science. I would experience the feeling time to time mostly when I find aesthetic value in something – or I call it an ah ha moment, whether it be the climax of a novel or movie, an un known truth finally revealed, always during and after meditation and often times the ASMR would be shortly accompanied by a few tears dropping from my eyes however I don’t know why the tears come it’s not an emotional response that I can identify more so like a by product of the ASMR experience. Any way as the years passed and given my curious nature I continued experiencing the ASMR and eventually was able to isolate the base cause of said sensation without the need for any external factors. When I turned 19 I mastered the ability to activate the sensation at any given time by sheer will. But only for seconds at a time. After that I found myself working on maintaining the sensation for longer and longer durations. I’m 32 now and ever since the great conjunction that just happened it’s been easier for me to activate the sensation and to maintain it now I can easily maintain the sensation for as long as I am focused on doing so and if I am distracted I can maintain the sensation for up to 30 seconds uninterrupted. I am not willing to participate in any research studies because honestly I know what this is already I’ve always known it as a quickening and the more I rely on my intuitive nature the more is revealed about the nature of all things…. in conclusion if what you see with your eyes you don’t deny you don’t need no proof. But u deny what’s in your heart then you don’t believe no truth.

  2. I am 57 and have felt this sensation since third grade, as best as I can recall. The teacher passing out papers to each one of us or the sound our workbooks made when tossed on a table. Someone crinkling paper gently or writing making gentle scratching sounds gives me the ASMR reaction every time. 30 years ago I was working in an office who had a janitor who was very slow and deliberate when he cleaned our office, vacuuming (wasn’t loud) slowly and puttering about would sent me into a trance like state that I would have to snap out of. Maybe this phenomenon is a form of being able to slip into a trance to be hypnotized. Some people can and some just can’t be put into another level of consciousness. I also, rarely, experience sleep paralysis, which I personally find terrifying, but am very interested in the “why”. I really appreciate this opportunity to share my experiences and reading about others.

  3. I have experienced ASMR as long as I can remember. Light touch and the sound of someone’s voice literally makes me extremely tired, but very much at peace – like the best feeling in the world. I have searched for years trying to see if anyone else experiences this – it wasn’t until tonight that I found other people have the same feelings as me.
Also, live music and dance performances give me goosebumps and sometimes the same feeling but not usually as strong as touch.
So glad to hear I am not alone.

  4. I’m often triggered by someone doing something for me. I wonder if it goes back to infancy. In the past, I would have been afraid of telling anyone for fear they would think I was crazy.

    • I’m a 51-year old woman and I’m pretty sure I’ve been experiencing this since I was a little kid (like probably when getting my hair brushed or being read to), but my first definite memory that stands out was when I was a senior in high school and looking for a college/business school… a visiting recruiter sat down with me one-on-one and something about the sound of her voice (I think it was soft and melodic with a southern accent) or her seemingly genuine concern for me just gave me this definite “warm fuzzy feeling” the entire time… I felt like it was a sign that this was where I was “supposed” to go, and I knew it was stupid to base my decision on something like that, but I kinda did, lol.

Since then, I’ve noticed it happens pretty much every time a bank teller counts out money to me, lol… and I don’t feel like it’s so much about the money itself, more about the personal attention/service, which always seemed weird to me too and embarrassing enough not to mention it to most people, lol… but now that I just learned the term ASMR and have been reading up on it, I see how bank tellers’ soft “library” voice, the sound of crisp bills, and the repetitive hand movements probably all contribute to my reaction. That’s a lot of common triggers at once, so I’m actually surprised I don’t see the money thing come up in testimonials of listed online as a trigger more. But I did google and found ASMR money videos, so I’m not the only one! I haven’t watched any yet but will when I have time, as I’m curious if a video is enough for me.

I had forgotten until I read others’ comments, but taking taking polls on the telephone usually do it to me too, and it makes me unable to properly concentrate on the questions and answers options, lol.

Getting my hair cut and/or brushed often does it too. Also unexpected acts of kindness. Personal attention/service is almost always involved for me.

I wonder if people with sociopathic, psychopathic, or antisocial behavior disorders experience ASMR at a lower rate than “regular” people do? I just can’t imagine people like that getting the “warm fuzzies”, lol.

Also, I read it’s now being used in advertising, which makes me wonder if salespeople, scammers, users, etc deliberately incorporate common triggers into their presentation… if not, it will probably soon be a standard part of their training, so beware! Oh and then there’s romancers/seducers, I’m sure ASMR would help them get what they want too!

  5. I’ve experienced this for as long as I can remember. When I was little me and my best friend invented a game where one of us would sit while the other stood close in front gently describing an imaginary outfit and hairstyle for the seated person, with lots of hand gestures but no actual touching. It was awesome!!
As an adult I get it watching someone do something very carefully, especially if it is for me. Once I half watched someone through a window carefully making a cup of tea and plate of biscuits for me while I raked their lawn and I got the feeling. My mum and bro get it too. Before we knew the official name we assumed there would be a German name for it and asked a German cousin who knew exactly what we were talking about but had never talked about it before and didn’t have a name for it.
My boyfriend has no idea what i’m talking about when I describe it and assumes it’s something weird or kinky!
