Polls about ASMR

Scroll down to take some polls related to your thoughts and experiences about ASMR.

After you make your selection and click “Vote”, you will see all the data from prior visitors.

If you have already voted and just want to see the data then click “View Results.”  The data from the polls are specific to the visitors to this website and may not represent the general population or other specific populations.

Note about the poll above when viewing results: because it is “Select All That Apply” the total votes does not equal the total voters because each voter could vote more than once.  To get an estimate of the number of voters, look at the total votes on other polls which were not “Select All That Apply.” because those total votes = total voters.

  1. I am 50+ and came here looking for a way to sift through all the ASMR that doesn’t work for me to find “the good stuff.” I have had it since I was very young,- I remember as a child in school all the kids would sit on the floor to watch a movie or listen to a story and we would “draw” on each other’s backs with our fingers and you would try to guess the picture. I loved it. That was the first trigger I remember.

I remember sharing a room with my older sister who would get up earlier than I to get ready for school. I would doze and listen to her quietly and methodically sort through her make up, or jewelry, or clothes in her closet before leaving. I had actually forgotten about this trigger until I stumbled upon YangHaiYing sorting through her teaspoon collection- what joy! I still return to 10 year old videos of her finding just the right paint brush or tea collection.

YangHaiYing’s mannerisms reminded me of my grandmother who often had her own “just so” ways of doing nearly everything. I also remember watching my grandmother making a bed, slowly and thoroughly, straightening, pressing, sweeping, and flattening the well-worn sheets with her soft hands-( also well worn) to making the bed just so. Only to sleep in them again that night. It confused and fascinated me. To this day, I search for the best bed making video (Maria has come close) AND to this day, I don’t make my own bed-lol!

Something that I think makes a great ASMRtist is not just their use of sound, but their use of silence. I enjoy the slow, the silence, the gaps, the pacing. Not the fast foodish treatment of ‘reels’ and ‘tricktok’

I have absolutely misophonic reactions to most “wet” types of ASMR. The mouth sounds, gum chewing, clicking and lotion sounds just make me bonkers! Especially when ASMRtists layer extra wet sounds on top. So many great facial/skin videos ruined for those like me- seems like they could offer one prior to the editing and the add what some might consider the “enhanced” version as well. It seems like some artists such as Latte have increased their “wet” noises over the years.

While acknowledging that recording and listening to ASMR videos isn’t exactly natural and is most often staged, I also have no use for the “fake” or staged sounds. I am not talking about a complete fantasy type scenario of someone pretending to be an alien or speaking elvish, or an optometrist. That’s part of the gig. I get that some people love that lid being put on a jar or glass eye dropper put in the bottle sound- but it’s too much when it just goes on and on and on rattling the same lid or spoon or tapping that same lid! I’d much prefer an authentic trigger of an authentic action such as Baumgartner Restoration. Unintentional ASMR that is recognized as ASMR is often the BEST! Like the beauty of wild horses or free flying parrots in the rainforest vs horses performing in a 3-ring circus or a bird in a cage.

So as much as I LOVE the triggers that work for me, that is also as much, if not more, as I HATE the triggers that don’t. It’s great for other people- and apparently there are a lot of them out there, otherwise I wouldn’t have such a hard time. But how do I find the right videos for me? I’m so sick of hearing lip smacking and lotion hands!!!
